We Recognize the Importance of Service to Others.

J. Duffy Palmer

Estate Planning Attorney at Thomas Walters, PLLC

I grew up in Henderson, North Carolina where I was raised by my wonderful parents as the second of five children. Growing up, I loved to have fun riding bikes, exploring, and playing sports. I learned my passion for helping people by looking after my younger siblings and by volunteering in town and within our church. My parents instilled a strong work ethic, and so I began working at age 15 in between playing on my school’s football, basketball, and baseball sports teams.

After graduating from Northern Vance High School, I went off to Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. After my freshman year, I took two years off from college to serve a full-time volunteer mission for my church in Peru. While there I learned I was most happy helping other people. Upon returning to school I continued volunteering for various local organizations. While I was in Peru the college became Brigham Young University Idaho and I graduated with a degree in Sociology and minored in Spanish and Criminal Justice. I was an honor student three times. My biggest accomplishment while in Idaho was marrying my eternal companion who is also from North Carolina. Upon graduation, we returned to North Carolina to start our new life together.

We landed jobs in Durham and I began working for a non-profit to help people with disabilities get and keep jobs while my wife became a school teacher. I was promoted to manager and guided the program to help hundreds of people get jobs when they didn’t have one. We began our family, having our son. I later was hired by an international human service company where I was a Clinical Supervisor of two group homes located in Durham. This was an invaluable experience to see firsthand the life of people with significant disabilities living in Medicaid funded group homes. I then was hired by The Arc of the Triangle as a Director. I led the organization to grow to be about four times the size when I arrived there. This work gave me the perspective of family life with children with special needs or disabilities living at home. It taught me that many families lack access to legal services and an attorney who truly understands their unique needs.

Feeling a need to be more technically equipped to help people, I decided to attend the North Carolina Central University School of Law. I studied in the evening program to be able to support my family while earning my law degree. This phase of my life allowed me to grow my dedication, time management, and focus, as my wife and I welcomed our daughter during the final exams of my second year of law school. Upon passing the bar, The Arc promoted me to General Counsel. While I loved that role, I missed working more directly with families so I decided to pursue the private practice of the law. And last year, my wife and I welcomed another son to our family.

Now, working for Thomas Walters, PLLC as a licensed North Carolina attorney is a dream! The firm’s unique approach to Estate Planning is one that keeps the most important piece in mind- the client! My passion for serving others drives me to educate and help families on how to plan their estate so that things are easier for the families they leave behind, they protect a loved one’s disability benefits, and they keep more of their hard-earned money in a way that is least burdensome on their family. To me, nothing seems more unfair than for a family to lose all they have worked for after paying into a government system. We are all called to be good stewards of what we have been given. But none of us knows when our time will come.  So, we all need a plan! I truly consider myself privileged to assist families throughout North Carolina in the Triangle, Triad, Charlotte and surrounding areas!
